You’ll have to forgive me here, I feel a bit like Martin’s dad in the fabulous Irish cartoon Martin’s Life in that I don’t know the first thing about that program on the telly called ‘Game of Throws’ that everybody is talking about. But I do know that Diageo, owners of The Classic Malt Distilleries of Scotland, saw a great marketing opportunity and released a range of single malts that are tied to Game of Thrones. I’ve never seen such a clamor for these whiskies as I saw the week that we released them to the public – it was insane!
Now that the frenzy has died somewhat I thought it was about time that I got to see what all the fuss was about. I recently grabbed a bottle and a glass and poured myself a Winter’s Frost from ‘House Stark’, known in real life as the Dalwhinnie Distillery. The question I had upon hearing about these limited edition malts was, would they stand up against their sibling malts already on the market?
Well I can tell you now that after my initial nosing and tasting of Dalwhinnie Winter’s Frost that it does. It follows the house style of Dalwhinnie to a T, in that there is ample orchard fruits of green apple and ripe pears, complemented by golden honey and toasted malt. It’s not as rich or round on the palate as the Dalwhinnie 15 year old, but that certainly doesn’t detract from the overall effect, which is a good, balanced, and very drinkable malt and one where pleasure and price connect at exactly the right spot of just $44.99 a bottle.
