Allram Strass Grüner Veltliner will leave you yodeling for more

Many great things hail from Austria – Mozart, Freud, Riedel crystal, Sacher torte, Red Bull (who knew??). But Austria has also blessed the world with excellent wines, including Grüner Veltliner. Allram Strass’s 2017 vintage in particular has caught our fancy. Handpicked from a cross-section of Allram’s vineyards, the white grapes that make up this refreshing wine bring with them a true taste of Austrian terroir. The slate, limestone, and loose, gravelly soil that these vines grow in appear as minerality on the palate, alongside tastes of citrus and pepper. For $19.99, you can practically rest on the banks of the Kamp river and listen for yodelers in the nearby hills. Or you can do what we’ve done- take a bottle home and while away an afternoon with crisp, delicious refreshment. Prost!

“Now that we’re in full summer mode, it’s time to break out the refreshing whites, and if you’re quiet enough, you can hear Grüner Veltliner calling from the hills of Austria. No? Just me? OK. I don’t believe I’ve written about a Grüner in our email newsletter before, which is such a shame. Austria’s signature grape has been on a steady climb in popularity since the late 1990s for good reason. This white grape can be as rich and expressive as Grand Cru Burgundy, or as sleek and minerally as dry Riesling. The 2017 Allram Strass Grüner Veltliner falls in the latter category. Just bottled in January, it’s fresh with lemon peel and mineral notes, plus a charming, subtle peppery finish (a hallmark of Grüner). It’s an awesome wine to pair with grilled fish, buffalo chicken wings, or asparagus with melted butter. If you like white Burgundy, or French Sauvignon Blanc, this is your wine!” – Brendan Kennedy, Vine & Table Wine Buyer
