You may have heard of them but may have never tried any of the wonderful products from Flat 12 Bierwerks. Flat 12 is a brewery that defines the “drink local” philosophy. Brewed in downtown Indianapolis, Flat 12 has a magnificent array of great beers on tap, and now in bottles, making them a must-try for the experienced craft beer drinker as well as those just starting the journey. Rob, Flat 12’s head brewer, has been developing and perfecting more than thirty different recipes over fifteen years. His passion and love comes from porters, but I can tell you that this is not the only place he shines. I have yet to try a Flat 12 beer that I didn’t absolutely love.
From their Upside Down Blonde (just been released in bottles), to their Pogue’s Run Porter (their first bottled porter), these beers are delicious. This brewery doesn’t just focus on the dark beers. Although the dark is what I first fell in love with at Flat 12, their lighter and hoppier beers have also found a place in my weekly beer schedule. The Upside Down Blonde just came out and boasts a wonderful balance of citrus fruits with a malt backbone. This beer is perfect for hot summer days. As well as their Half Cycle IPA, which has a massive 104.1 IBU rating and a 6% ABV, and can certainly be considered a sessionable imperial IPA, which is something that is almost unheard of. The Half Cycle is a hophead’s dream beer. The beer that got me into drinking Flat 12 beers was their Pogue’s Run Porter. I would certainly say Rob has perfected the porter and Pogue’s Run is it. Robust and chocolate tones keep you coming back for more, but it doesn’t sit as heavy as a stout does, so you don’t feel yourself filling up. This is a go-to porter for me… and I rarely find a person who is looking for a porter that doesn’t like this one.
Flat 12 truly does some innovative and inspiring beers in their tap room as well. This has become a regular destination for me not only because the beer is so good, but also because the people are some of the most helpful and nice around. Every time I visit the brewery I always tell myself to only buy a growler of the seasonal limited beers they put on draft, but I usually leave with two of the limited growlers and a growler of Pogue’s Run and Half Cycle. This brewery’s products are a must try for everyone and something that should be checked out because I truly believe they have a beer that can fit anyone’s taste buds. Come on in and see Vine & Table’s full array of Flat 12 products, I’d be happy to show you around.
