He’s The Man!

I recently attended a wine tasting at Carrol & Co. to meet Bo Barrett with Chateau Montelena. The man that put Napa Valley on the map.  That’s right, Bo Barrett from Chateau Montelena. How is that do you ask?

Well, Bo Barrett was asked to represent several wineries from Napa Valley in the 1976 blind wine tasting in France with all of France’s top wine critics. It was at this tasting that Chateau Montelena beat the French wines with their chardonnay. As well as Stag’s Leap’s Cabernet was also one of the winners. It was after this tasting that Napa Valley’s reputation for great wines became a worldwide and Napa Valley came alive.

So you can only imagine my excitement when I received the opportunity to meet him. It is rumored that some winemakers learn the trade while others it’s in their blood and for Bo it is in his blood. He is in fact a simple man that loves everything from the soil he grows his grapevines on to flying his own plane around the US to share his amazing wines.

Chateau Montelena Chardonnay– Their signature Chardonnay has medium amount of oak on it, great balance and complexity, thick tannins with vanilla on the finish.

Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon– The Cabernet was full bodied with cherry and wild berries, oak, chewy tannins and a very long intense finish.

Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Estate– The Estate Canernet was “The Big Boy” as I call it. Although young it is very drinkable with blackberry, cassis, thick tannins, moderate acidity and overwhelming complexity.

It was nice to meet the man responsible for being so courageous to take on the France wine industry and win. It is even nicer that there wines even after 35 years that this winery has kept the same concept and standards with their wine for us to enjoy consistently every year. -Bethann
