Every cloud has a silver lining. The cloud in this case relates to Cosentino Winery, producers of one of the country’s most recognizable Zinfandel wines. The winery went bankrupt in late 2008 despite making many fantastic wines for well over a decade. In early 2011, the winery along with its labels and brands, was purchased by Vintage Wine Estates. We will therefore see CigarZin again in the future but the 2009 is the last vintage produced by Mr. Cosentino, founder of the winery. New owner, new winemaker does not equal the same wine!
However, there is a silver lining. We were able to purchase the last 18 cases of the 2009 CigarZin! The wine is a cigar lover’s dream, big and rich with enough complexity that can stand shoulder to shoulder with a big smoke. The palate is saturated with notes of juicy raspberries, cherry liqueur, crushed black pepper and a hint of clove. The finish is layered with a touch of tart fruit and cocoa.
Not into cigars? Don’t worry, this wine drinks beautifully on its own and also pairs well with a wide range of foods. You may want to hurry in and buy a few bottles, but be sure to do it before you tell your friends!
