MTW Wine Reviews – June

In order to save you time and money, I’ve tasted hundreds of bottles and selected the highest quality, under-$15 wines that I could find. These wines will rotate on a regular basis, but what won’t change is my commitment to providing you with superb, yet affordable, wines that you can enjoy on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays without guilt! Each MTW will also include food pairing notes to make your shopping even easier.

Here is a sample of wines I have chosen for the month of June…

Protea Chenin Blanc 2017 $14.99
I have loved this wine from the day I first tasted it five years ago. Lively acidity, clean and fresh, which is just what you want from a Chenin Blanc (Vouvray in France), and makes a perfect wine to enjoy on the patio during the warm summer evenings. The winery is named after South Africa’s National flower ‘Protea’ which decorates the bottle like an appealing tattoo you can’t look away from.

There is a delightful floral bouquet intertwined with stone fruits that welcomes you and guides you into a vibrant racy mouthfeel with loads of white peach and apricot wrapped around a core of lime, grapefruit and orange peel. Long soft finish with a subtle lingering sweetness makes you want to take another sip. This is a must have wine for this summer and is a perfect fit for the MTW Wine program. If you’re looking to pair it with something, try some shellfish, spicy food, lean fish or some mild and soft cheese.

Vinalba Malbec/Cab Franc Reserva 2016 $14.99
This is a winning combination, excellent Malbec grapes sourced from the best region in the world- the Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina, combined with an experienced French Wine Maker from Bordeaux. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Herve J. Febre on a number of occasions and his passion for making great wines that reflect their terroir and tells a story is obvious. He asked me which of his wines I liked the most and I say, “not until you answer first”- this was both our favorites. We smiled and hugged and a long friendship began.

This is a blend of 80% Malbec and 20% Cab Franc and the 2016 is as good as any I’ve tasted. Inviting nose of dark red fruits leads you into rich mouthfuls of blackberries, red currents, dark cherries and chocolate with a hint of plum and spices on the finish. A complete package that will put a smile on your face till the last drop. Of course, there is always another bottle, especially with a group of friends.

Gerard Bertrand ‘Cap Insula’ Red Blend 2016 $14.99
If you’re looking for a red wine to ease you into the summer, this is the one! A delightful blend of 47% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 23% Carignan is sourced from one of the most beautiful parts of the Languedoc region- definitely worth a visit.

This is classic Cote du Rhone without the price tag- medium bodied, totally approachable and way too easy to drink with layers of hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. This is a delicious wine with wonderful enticing aromas of ripe red fruits, a silky-smooth mouthfeel loaded with bright red fruits, black currents, tobacco and subtle chocolate all designed to enhance the simple pleasures of sharing a meal with friends.
