If you’re tired of hunting for high-quality weekday wines, I’d like to introduce you to a new concept that I’m calling MTW Wines. In order to save you time and money, I’ve tasted hundreds of bottles and selected the highest quality, under-$15 wines that I could find. These wines will rotate on a regular basis, but what won’t change is my commitment to providing you with superb, yet affordable, wines that you can enjoy on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays without guilt! Each MTW will also include food pairing notes to make your shopping even easier.
Here is a sample of wines I have chosen this month … there are plenty more but you’ll have to come in and check them out!
While Australia’s Hunter Valley established its reputation by growing some of the best Semillon in the world, Shiraz started to make its mark and challenged for the top dog position nearly 20 years ago. Hope Estate’s Shiraz is a fine example of what Hunter can produce at a price well below where it is drinking. This has everything you would expect from an Australian Shiraz- impressive dark fruits with a serving of plums, tea and spices on the finish … all wrapped in elegant restraint.
Chalk Hill Estate
In 1972, while flying over Russian River, Fred Furth glanced down at a natural amphitheater carved into the hills of eastern Sonoma and decided the site had the potential for a world class vineyard. 47 years later, his vision is a reality beyond his wildest dreams. Chalk Hill Estate is situated on a 1,300-acre property consisting of open wilderness, hospitality center, sports fields, equestrian pavilion and stables, guest houses, and fishing and swimming ponds. And of course, there’s also 300 acres of vineyards and an absolutely stunning winery producing excellent wines at several different price points lead by winemaker Courtney Foley.
I had the pleasure of tasting through their current vintages and I’m happy to present three of their wines for your drinking pleasure in our MTW Wines section. Once you taste these wines I’m sure you’ll agree- they’re a winner! All these wines sell for around $25.00 but I’ve been able to get the price down to under $15.00 to enable to be offered in the MTW Wines Program.
This is a great example of what Sonoma can produce when you think outside the box. Don’t get me wrong, this has a big rich inviting mouthfeel, just not overly oaky and buttery. It is fruit-driven with layers of golden apple, butterscotch, and vanilla, with subtle notes of tangerine and nut on the finish. Lovely weight and balance make this a wine you’ll want to share with friends. You won’t be sorry.
Mouthfuls of strawberries and ripe cherries greet your first sip. Give it enough time and notes of cola, forest floor, and spices will emerge on a lengthy finish. A great wine to pair with salmon on the grill, salads or light chicken dishes and of course, some friends.
This is a Bordeaux-style blend comprising Cabernet, Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Syrah- all blended together to put a smile on your face from the first sip. A soft, inviting mouthfeel reveals a depth and complexity not usually found at this price point, with loads of black currant, blueberries, chocolate, plum, and subtle spices on the finish. Another great wine to share with friends! You won’t be disappointed with this one!
