November’s Pick 24 Party traditionally features the very best wines from the past year’s Pick 24 events, so let’s take a little trip down memory lane- hopefully you’ll find a few bottles you may have missed. This month’s party, on Wednesday, November 6 from 5:30 – 7pm will also help to ease you into the holiday shopping season with an array of great wines at even better prices. Let’s look at a few wines ideal to serve for Thanksgiving; after all, the great feast falls just 3 weeks after the Pick 24 Release Party.
Start the festivities by greeting your guests with a bottle of something sparkling and fun. We recommend Chateau Moncontou’s Vouvray Cuvee Predilection 2009. This French sparkler is fine and complex, with notes of hazelnut, layers of acidity, toast, and fresh fruit. A flute of Vouvray is the perfect way to start the holiday and liven up the hungry crowd.
As the afternoon progresses and the turkey begins to brown, it’s time to pull out the appetizers (more on that in a moment), flip on the football game, and relax with a crisp white. Martin Codax Albariño is a great choice, luring the drinker in with tastes of ripe apples, peach, apricot, melon, grapefruit and lemon zest. The fruit is supported by a striking balance of acidity, body and aromas. You might also try one of the two Chardonnays at the Pick 24- Relativity, with its perfect balance of fruit, structure, and oak on the finish, and Saintsbury 2010 which is heavier on the oak but still displays orange, lime, and pineapple notes with a spicy finish.
Speaking of appetizers, our friends from Scratch food truck will be on hand at the Pick 24 Party giving out free samples of their famous bacon marmalade mixed with cream cheese, spread on toasted French bread, and topped with chopped tomatoes and onions. This is a perfect savory snack to tide you over until the big meal on Thanksgiving, and would go great with one of the Chardonnays mentioned above.
Now, what to drink with dinner itself? If you are partial to reds with your turkey and trimmings, you can’t go wrong with Brassfield Estate Winery Eruption 2011. This is a Lake County red from grapes grown on the slopes of an extinct volcano. The blend is Syrah, Tempranillo, Malbec, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, and — ta dum — Zinfandel, with Syrah at the highest percentage, 22%. A rich and intense wine with aromas of dark berry, sandalwood and cocoa giving way to jammy, ripe and expressive flavors, it pairs well with food without dominating or overwhelming it, and would be a great addition to any holiday table.
For those who prefer their bird paired with white wine, consider Casa de Bucalemu Sauvignon Blanc 2012. A fall Sauvignon Blanc (yes, there a such thing as a fall Sauvignon Blanc), this wine has a thick, lush body style with flavors of apricot and passion fruit, with a teasing amount of tartness and almonds on the finish. The structure is hearty enough to stand up to a heavy, savory meal, while the fruit is both balanced and forward so as not to be forgotten after a mouthful of mashed potatoes.
We do hope you’ll join us at the Pick 24 Release Party as we feature all these and many more great wines. As always, we will do our best to find the wine, spirits, and beer to make your holiday more memorable.
