We all know the signs- school is back in session, the days are getting shorter, and the pools are closing down. Summer is fading fast, friends, but we are determined to squeeze as much out of it as we can! Join us for one last blast of summer at our September Pick 24 Release Party this Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, as we break out some unusual and refreshing whites to see us through the last of the hot weather. We’ll also open up some fabulous reds to ease you into autumn.
Are you tired of your standby whites? Ready to uncork something from a part of the world you might not, but should, associate with great wines? Look to Slovenia! Giocato Pinot Grigio is committed to quality and harvests its grapes by hand along the Italian border. This refreshing wine has elements of crisp gala apple, fresh pears, and almonds. This is a perfect end of summer sipper.
Sticking with wines from off-the-beaten path, you should also check out Musar Jeune Blanc from Lebanon. This is a zesty blend of Viognier, Chardonnay, and Vermentino grapes that dance in the glass. The nose sparkles with apple, ripe banana, and pineapple. On tasting you discover bright acidity but also a long finish that has some really nice notes of herbs and fresh mown hay.
Another sure-fire winner to seek out at Pick 24 is Jardin Sauvignon Blanc. This South African beauty picks up hints of green pepper and slate from the granite and loamy soil that nurture the vines. Pear, orange zest, and tropical fruit keep the wine balanced. This wine is great on its own or paired with fish or a crispy salad.
Of course, you can drink white wines all year long, but as the temperatures start to drop, sometimes it’s nice to warm up with a luscious red. We have just the thing- Stage Left Syrah 2007. This wine may just steal the show! Wine buyer extraordinaire Bethann recently met with Stage Left owner and Indiana native Melinda Doty, who presented this great Syrah to us. This wine would sell at the winery for $42 but we are offering it for just $16.99 this month. Only 195 cases were produced and this is a must try. Big extracted cherry fruit, wild berry, tight dry leathery tannins, tobacco, and sweet spice on the finish: wow. Now that’s the way to start the fall!
On the lighter side, we’ll also be pouring A to Z Pinot Noir 2011. This wine, from the Willamette Valley, should land on Wine Spectators Top 100 Wines of 2013 list. Soft lush cherry, wild berries, violets hold the flavor together, while super fine tannins, vanilla and a hint of baking spice give this wine a complexity and suppleness that can be hard to find in a Pinot Noir. This is a Pick 24 must-taste!
Remember that 19 other amazing wines will be on sale and available to taste this Wednesday evening- we look forward to seeing you there!
